The east African country South Sudan is the newest nation in the world. Over the past four decades, the land has repeatedly experienced ethnic conflicts, and thousands of people became refugees. Only a short time after independence from Sudan in 2011, the population lived in peace. Since mid-December 2013, a civil war is raging in the country. A conflict between two ethnic tribes, the Dinka and the Nuer.
Since 2011, around 18 Sisters of the organization DMI (Daughters of Mary Immaculate) live in the region of Wau and the capital Juba. They help to raise awareness for peace and reconciliation between the two tribes.
In Juba, the sisters work in the UNIMISS refugee camp and the conflict zones in surrounding villages.
The work at the camp consists mostly of peace work; they found women peace groups, provide medical service, and help the children through games and songs to process the war experience.
